Dear 2nd graders,
What a wonderful job! I am sure your poems and pictures will allow your friends in Kentucky to visualize what life in Chicago is like. I have so enjoyed coming into your classroom this year to see you develop as writers! Keep up the good work...and don't forget to keep writing over the summer!

Dear 2nd graders,
You guys have done a terrific job writing and illustrating your poems! Since this is my first year in Chicago, I learned a lot about the city from what you have produced, and I know that your Kentucky friends will really enjoy them. I can't wait to follow your writing careers until you finally reach me in Middle School!

Sincerely,
Mr. Schwartz

Winter recess at our school.kids_in_snow.jpg We go outside if it's above 30˚. We have to wear snowpants, hats, gloves, scarves, warm coats, and boots. This is a typical winter day.

Answers to the questions posted by Kentucky school kids:
1. No, we do not have literacy groups.
2. Our temperature today (January 26) was a high of 23˚ Fahrenheit (but it feels like 10˚F because of the windchill. The low today will be 17˚F.
3. It looks yucky, cold, and dreary outside. The sky is gray!
4. There are 12 people in our class. (There are 3 other 2nd grades.) There are about 520 people in our school. (Our grades are from pre-nursery to 8th grade.) There are about 2.7 million people living in Chicago.
5. The climate in Chicago is very cold in the winter, average temperature is 27˚F, the summers are mild.

Today - January 27, 2010 - The temperature is 7˚F. It feels like -10˚F with the windchill. There is no snow on the ground because last week we had a "heat wave" of 40˚F, it rained and washed all the snow away. This is a picture of our security guards who stand outside for an hour directing traffic. As you can see, they are very bundled up! They are wearing snowsuits. You can not have any skin exposed to the air. It's FREEZING!!
